  • Part of the problem is that you literally cannot build up a third party under First Past the Post voting.

The thing is, the current most popular alternative voting system, RCV is just as bad for third parties.

RCV was first invented in the 1780s by the Marquis de Condorcet, under the name Instant Runoff. He wrote about it, mostly to highlight it’s problems.

Like the fact that under IRV the majority preferred candidate can easily lose the election.

And that’s the tip of the iceberg when it comes to flaws in IRV.

Thankfully it’s been over 200 years since then, and better voting systems have been designed.

STAR is as close to the magical best system designed to date.

If we had STAR for all elections, plus voting day as a national holiday, we’d be in a vastly better place.

  • The thing is, Left vs Right is already a measure of authoritarian vs Democratic.

The original use of the terms comes from the French Revolution. There was a vote on if the King should have an absolute veto over laws passed by the assembly. Those who said no sat to the left of the Speakers podium. Those who said yes sat on the right.

The reason why left and right were applied to economic policy was because Marx described Communism as a form of extreme Democracy. Whereas Capitalism concentrates power into the hands of a select few.

It’s still a measure of where the power rests. In the hands of the people or the hands of the state/leader.

You can break it down to dozens of categories, but it’s all authoritarian vs Democratic in the end.

As a note, Lenin style single party “communism” is about as far from Marx’s ideal as you can get.

Dictators and Kings are all the enemies of the people.

  • No, but it’s the same sort of pattern that you see in mass shooters.

Disaffected young men. Educated, but with minimal meaningful job prospects. Little to no family, or no close ties.

The sort of young man who wouldn’t mind dying, or killing, for a cause, even if that cause is just gaining people’s attention.

In the US, those sorts of young men do all sorts of things, many live productive lives. But almost every single mass shooter is one of those young men. Luigi is one of those young men, That’s why the comparison is apt.

He just decided to kill a rich asshole instead of a bunch of randos. All because his particular radicalization was via pain instead of the usual right wing internet shitholes.

  • People who know this shit have been through Mangione’s social media feeds.

    https://shatterzone.substack.com/p/alleged-ceo-shooter-luigi-mangione

The guy likely did it. The guy’s social media history puts him right in that “potential mass shooter” territory, but one more radicalized by pain rather than the right-wing shitholes of the internet.

But the part no one’s talking about yet are the copycats to come. Because this guy got attention for it. Accolades even. That’s part of what mass shooters want. Attention. Accolades are a wet dream for them.

At least this will be better than when they were murdering children for the shock value.

So yeah, I think “Rich asshole murdered” will become more common. If only the richest asshole in whatever Podunk little town the mass shooter was from.

And yet, I can’t say that it will be a completely bad thing. If the mass shootings must happen, (and America apparently says they must) then I’d rather it be a rich asshole who bites it than a classroom full of grade schoolers.

  • The simple truth is, the entire case against Hunter Biden was politically motivated from the start.

He paid the back taxes and the gun charges are normally laughed out of court.

This was always a Republican prosecutor wanting to make a name for themselves, and with Trump taking power, well, we all know how vindictive Trump is.

I don’t expect this pardon to matter much, Trump and the Republicans don’t care about law or tradition or reality. They care about power, and are less than 2 months away from it.

I’m not sure where they got those numbers.

All nuclear waste produced to date isn’t 500-1500 cubic meters.

As to storage. Just bury it again. We dug it up, we can bury it. There are a few places that are currently doing just that.

Or, here a wild idea. Just burn the waste. It’s something like 90% unburned fuel, just reprocess it and burn it.
