As an Iranian, who is familiar with Islam I can give a explanation:
when prophet Mohammad first announced his prophecy and people in Arabian peninsula started joining him, a lot of slaves (or bonded servants) joined him.
also he would massage was about equality between poor and rich and he would speak about your worth not having anything with your wealth.
these and many other issues (they tried to silence him with riches but he refused), caused a lot of rich tribal leader to seek out their slaves to see if they are Muslim and would brutally torture them (to the death) to denounce Mohammad.
a lot of those slave would not repent and would be killed.
so Mohammad told them if you are getting tortured and dying, you can say you have denounced me and are no longer Muslim so that you can save your life. (kind like Jews in WWII Europe trying to save their life that they had to hide their identity)
that is sum of total of my life as an Iranian that I ever read anywhere hearing that you can lie as a muslim.

I wonder if this guy ever thinks about whether his actions will ever catch up with him and what that might look like. He must know hes lying through his teeth every time he opens his trap. Regardless of whether he’s convinced himself of some arbitrary greater good, he must know how much his actions negatively affect his direct constituents, and the wider US and global populations. He must be aware that regardless of claims of greater good, the legal tightrope he’s walking is precarious.
He either has an outstanding ability to suppress what must be constant internal screaming highlighting extreme personal risk, or he’s so fucking dense that he hasn’t even considered it. It seems impossible that someone could fail upwards so extraordinarily so it makes me think the former must be true and in that case how the fuck does he sleep? How does he stave of total nervous breakdown? Why would you put yourself through that to achieve so much misery?
