The Trump administration’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed new changes to federal vehicle regulations that would allow companies to skip including brake pedals in “vehicles designed to be driven exclusively by automated driving systems.”

The proposal, if adopted, would remove a major regulatory barrier for companies like Tesla and Zoox, which are developing vehicles intended to be fully autonomous, without a steering wheel or pedals. The public will now have 30 days to comment on the proposal before the DOT decides whether to approve the changes.

This is the latest of a series of proposed changes to vehicle laws from the Trump DOT. Late last year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed removing a number of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements around windshield wiping and defogging systems, and tire placards.

President Biden was also working in this direction while in office. During his administration, the NHTSA proposed and ultimately finalized a rule that allowed autonomous vehicles to operate without steering wheels.

It wouldn’t matter if the FSD in Teslas were significantly better than it is, there is no way I’d feel comfortable in a vehicle that lacks any manual control override and I feel like most of the public is many years away from being emotionally ready for that.

We need like, aviation-level reliability and safety culture to come to the auto industry first.

Yeah, a tesla just ran into a whole ass house last week and murdered the person inside, and the regulatory agencies and police were all “haha boys will be boys”. I will never get into any “fully autonomous” vehicle while the state retains a single molecule of what we have now.

How much would this really do if such requirements still exist outside the US? I mean I know Tesla sales have been in sharp decline most places anyway, but still.

They’re the cars that crash into houses but no one is liable for the murder. It’s a “self-driving” car with full surveillance capabilities inside and out for the state, but without the ability for the people inside to stop them by any means. You’d be forced to watch it slowly run over a child or bring you to the police station, without any personal autonomy to stop either. An “Autonomous Vehicle”

Well I guess in the future I’ll be walking if it’s a choice between that and riding a robo taxi without a mechanical stop.
