I avoided FB like the plague, then I decided to move to northern Maine. It’s the only thing people use here to communicate. They don’t know, or want to know, anything else. Data harvesting, privacy, etc. Are not concerns that people have, or are aware of here. I have to use it if I have any desire to interact with fellow humans. The daily toxicity is slowly killing me. IG and Whatsapp are things I’ve never gotten into, at least.

I’m surprised anyone uses meta anything at all given their gluttonous data harvesting, privacy invasions, and brain smoothing content.

The primary reason I stay far from it is that I don’t want any activities I perform on the web with their tracking bullshit to ever be exposed to my friends and family, whether through a hack or their legitimate means such as this.

Depending in which part of the world or based on social groups Facebook and it’s messenger are still rather widely used features, its the most popular social media sites.
In addition Instagram is still rather popular, due to some unfathomable reasons and Whatsapp is still the global leader for messaging services.

So just a fraction of people care about data harvesting, Meta still owns most popular services.

It was frustrating, leaving the 🇺🇸 behind with our materialism, having ditched all “meta” stuff since Cambridge Analytica, only to find that finding housing, ordering food, calling a taxi, contacting the postal service all was on Facebook/Whatsapp/IG.

I couldn’t even view the village council mandates at our new home without it. When looking for housing, agents kept sending links to FBMP listings. I’d ask for photos and get a link to a FB gallery. I stuck to my guns and didn’t use it, instead asking agents to email me pics and friends to show me things, but I got a lot of eyerolling, and it made everything much more difficult.
