ANOTHER Socialist? Quick! Let’s KILL the Epstein Investigation to WIN Back MORE Voters!
-Chuck Schumer for Some Reason!
Unrelated to anything but I love your comments.
It’s great to see socialist mayors win out. Hopefully this inspires more of them to run for Congress and the Senate. We all know a lot of these Democrats are paid to dive on pretty much anything remotely helpful to the average US citizen.
I don’t know of any other mayoral races besides this and NYC, but that alone is huge. Two of the largest shipping hubs on both sides of the country being run by people who want to make life better for as many people as possible, could be both the marker and catalyzing agent for the exact sort of tide shift you’re describing
I’m not American but Mayor’s where I’m from are pretty powerless to make people’s lives better. The only thing they control is property tax. Do American Mayor’s have way more power?
In really big cities they do have some sway, but at least in Seattle there was also a lot of turn over in the city council that looks more friendly to the left, and any success in a big city can be used as a policy example.
NYC on the other hand is a different animal entirely, I’d hesitantly say Mamdani is the most powerful city mayor on the planet, and if he’s not he’s top 3 because of how central the city is not just nationally but globally.
Let’s be honest. One race had a NIMBY corporate stooge and the other had a Trump backed constantly in a scandal sleezeball.
It wasn’t hard for anyone else to win against those options. Not really a sign that socialism is taking over cities.
It’s like they could create a socialist party, so that America actually has at least one left-leaning party.
No, the mainline Democratic party is nowhere near being left wing.
They could but with FPTP it’d be somewhat self defeating. Generally safer to run with the Dems for the most part, though if you are in a state with RCV or even jungle primaries you should definitely go for it. But as of right now the better strategy on the national level is to pull the same thing the tea party and MAGA did to the Republicans.
Seattle almost got ranked choice voting. The initiative unfortunately failed. :(
