I had a narcissistic parent growing up who loved to promise things.
By promising things, they can feel better about themselves because they had the intention to make things right, and that’s often enough self-satisfaction in itself to make them feel better about their own actions and abuse.
I don’t think that’s exactly what’s going on in politics, but it definitely has that feeling down here among the unwashed masses struggling to survive.
I knew someone that had their parents promise things knowing that they were just going to say ‘Now we aren’t going to do X because you messed up this’

FWIW haven’t seen gas that cheap here in the USA for a while either.
I bet some places have had it that low, but $3/gallon is the cheapest I’ve seen in years

That’s still cheaper than I’ve seen for quite a while, though I have seen close. When converted, the gas prices where I live are closer to around USD 3.5-4/gallon. It does occasionally dip down to closer to what you were saying, though not quite.
Edit: just checked, gas station near me is 138.6 (we measure in cents here, so CAD 1.386/litre). That’s USD 3.75/gallon.

That’s a fair bit more, I pay ~3.50/gallon on average, but for premium.

If I lived in Alberta I could probably get it that cheap, but then I’d need to live in Alberta.
For reference, Alberta is sort of our Texas. Our last federal election, Alberta was 92% conservative. The premier there (basically governor) is also a MAGAt Trump supporter and was trying to fight for more independence which probably means joining the States. Not that it’ll happen but that’s the mentality of the government there, and a lot of its people too.

Holy shit that’s cheap gas! After some quick figuring I paid $4.14 USD to fill up this weekend.
The US is a major exporter of fuel now. So it makes sense.
Also we have some very dumb people that measure the presidency/economy by how much it costs for them to fill up their lifted dodge ram pick-up truck. A loaf of bread could cost $10, but as long as gas prices are a single cent lower they will worship the party in power.

tbf the cost of energy is pretty important because it’s a part of basically every product.
that’s actually precisely why i think the whole world should install more solar panels. it would make energy cheaper overall, and interestingly enough it would also make oil cheaper, since oil consumption would be lowered (because people can use electricity as a cheaper replacement) and that would mean there’s lower demand for oil while supply stays the same, so oil becomes cheaper too. solar panels help literally everyone, including the gas-guzzlers.

Yeah less than 1% of energy is coming from oil sources in the US.
Other fossil fuels are typically transported by barge, rail, or pipeline.
Barge and rail could use oil to transport things like coal, but that’s not going to be a significant portion of the cost.
I agree we need to be investing in renewable energy, but it’s not going to impact the price of gasoline unless most switch to electric vehicles

Seen packs of gum at checkout for that much, too. The cupholder-containers of like Ice Breakers and shit.
“Chewing gum” is (almost) no longer the cheap alternative to smoking.
