Exactly. Most people stop lying once they’re confronted with evidence that they’re lying because they feel shame.

That’s something this chonky asshole has never had to deal with.

That’s definitely part of it. But he’s also a pathological liar. He can’t *not* lie. His brain is borked.

Also he’s a raging narcissist and a sociopath. Which helps.

I’ve met a pathological liar, I don’t keep up with trump.

But this person would quite literally like to me about everything and I could never understand why. Even small things like “is tomorrow a holiday?”. he also had a habit of telling people fun facts but no one believed him (and sometimes it was true)

Said this many times over the years, sometimes get love, sometimes hate.

Trump is not lying. (OK, there are very rare moments when it’s clear he knows he’s lying but his brain quickly reframes the situation to be “true”.) The man is the wildest example of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) I’ve ever heard of. Mom had it, so I’m not using the word as it’s used now days, I mean it literally, by the DSM V.

People like that can’t be wrong. If it comes out his mouth, it has to be true. If you’re appalled at the obvious bullshit, you’ve likely never been close with someone that has NPD. This is perfectly normal for them, it’s just that most people are smarter than Trump. These people are unable to admit fault. When you and I dodge our failures, at some level we know we’re dancing around. Trump does not as he could never have been wrong in the first place.

I remember when I woke up to the fact that mom had never said she was wrong or apologized, not once in 50-years. I struggle to put that into strong enough words, never known another human like that. Coworker claimed her dad had NPD because when he fucked up he’d give her flowers instead of saying he was wrong. That action is him admitting fault. Imagine Trump “apologizing” like that. Can’t, can you?

I’m not shocked at his BS at all. I’m shocked so many can’t see the clear truth of the man.

Trump has said he’s never had anything to ask God for forgiveness about (something very similar if not that), he pushed his lies with a hurricane and drew a sharpie on a map to show he was correct (he wasn’t) and I’m pretty sure that’s all it took to get him on board to dissolve that federal service.

Just recently he was given an award in Michigan where he previously claimed he was awarded Michigan man of the year, I’m sure his narcissism was behind that so he can say he won an award from there.

While president there was a press event at four seasons total landscaping because Trump said there was a press conference at the’ four seasons’ (during the pandemic of all times).

How anyone can think someone who can’t admit any fault is a leader is beyond me. Sure he tells people it’s okay to be a racist asshole but do you want to march into Marianas Trench because he thought that’s where the front line is?

Because roughly half the country believes what he says. If it affirms their worldview (usually hatred of some “other”), then they are happy to take it on face value.

Because we have blatantly partisan media companies willing to parrot his lies and unwilling to challenge even the most harmful of them.

Because our two party system makes nearly everything a political issue that is supported by one party or the other, and voters have to choose between the lesser of two evils (whatever that means to that voter) than vote for someone who better represents their actual world view.

Because he is rich. Because he is privileged. Because he has never been made to actually face the consequences of intentionally lying to everyone.

It’s one of many ways he shows contempt for civilized society. And the system is so rotten that it doesn’t hold him accountable.

Because it doesn’t matter? It’s the old “a president I’d like to have a beer with” problem.

You can pretend as much as you’d like that the democratic process is tethered to rationale, but at the end of the day the whole system is set up to be a dog and pony show.

It’s always been a glorified popularity contest and has nothing to do with meritocracy, i.e judging cases upon the merits and demerits.

The problem imho is usability. The system has been shaped to be a popularity contest, but it could very well be shaped into something else.
