That’s it. Asia trip (with stopover in Istanbul on the way there and back) is done. A thoroughly enjoyable trip. Always felt safe. So much English spoken that we only learned a few basic phrases and relied on Google translate for the rest. 3 islands in the Philippines. 3 Islands in Indonesia. Singapore, Cambodia, and Vietnam. 10 weeks.

I had a date with a girl from Constantinople once but I had to pick her up in Istanbul.

I hate Istanbul. You know why?
Because it’s too far away from me!

    I mean… here I am, willing, able,
rearing to go, locked and loaded
so to speak… and there it is…
it decided to plop down its’ rear,
its’ fat lazy ass, on the opposite,
far side of the freakin’ world.

I mean… the nerve of this city!
What does it want from me, to
remain as far away as possible?
Well I’ll tell ya, it’s succeeding,
and doing a bang up job at it, too!

EDIT: that goes for you, too, Tokyo!

There is no cat in this picture. Therefore this is not Istanbul, merely Constantinople.

We spent a week in Istanbul about 15 years ago and had an amazing time. We made sure to learn some basic Turkish, but probably 75% of people we interacted with spoke English. It’s such an amazing city with decent public transit, great hospitality culture, and unparalleled history
